Next stop, Williams, Arizona

We got on the road by 10:30 and headed for Interstate 40, which we had not been down for more than 30 years. It didn't matter much as far as remembering the route since once you see a few miles of desert you've pretty much seen it all.

After a 100 miles all the desert looks pretty much the same.

The higher we went the terrain changed more and more.

One of our constant companions on Highway 40.

Diane took this because she thought it looked like a fortress.

Things really changed as we neared Needles and the Colorado River. The two main crops we saw were cotton and hay, lots of cotton. In the distance were the Sacramento Mountains, a moonscape compared to what we had seen in the desert.

Amazing what a little moisture will do for a desert.

We climbed steadily to over a mile high, where pine forests and cattle ranches rule. On a whim we pulled off the 40 to drive on Historical Highway 66 through Seligman, a town that wasn't much back then and is less today. But a couple establishments apparently are well known for there were quite a few bikers and tourists from France, from what we guessed by their accents. Most were interested in taking pictures and you'll see why below.

No, we didn't eat at the Road Kill Cafe.

No, this is not our hotel.
